FRASER WINS WIMBLEDON SINGLES CROWN

Beats Laver after 4 sets of power tennis

London, July 1. · Australian Neale Fraser, who rejected an £18,000 professional offer last year, won the men's singles lawn tennis title at Wimbledon today. The 26-year-old son of a Melbourne judge confirm- ed his position as the world's leading amateur player by beating slim, wiry Rod Laver, 21, of Queensland, who finished runner-up for the second successive year.

In two hours of thunderous [livery and broke back in the power play, the muscular six-next game. foot Victorian won 6-4, 3-8, 9-7," 7-5.

The match was interrupted for an hour by rain during the third act,

Wimbledon's first final between two left-handers was a dour, ponderous battle of rocketing services and crushing volleys and overheads. There was little finesse in it, apart from some astute lobbing by Fraser.

Victory weapon

There were few railles, and only 14 of the 47 games went to deuce.

Was

Main reason for Fraser's ultimate triumph his swinging, penetrating service, He hammered down six clean aces, and 10.other service balis left Laver, helplem.

Fraser is only the third left hander to become champion. Sir Norman Brookes (1007 and 1914) and Jaroslav. Drobny (1954) both were among the capacity 18,000 centre court crowd today --were the others. He is also the fourth Australian winner in the past five years.

The nearest Fraser got to the title on his six previous 10,000- mile visits to Wimbledon was in 1958, when he was runner-up to Ashley Cooper.

Laver was through again in the eighth for 5-3, and he served out the set 8-9 in 23 minutes.
