PROPOSED
CHURCH UNION
Sydney, May 17.
The division of churches in Australia “stinks to high heaven," the President General of the Methodist Church of Australasia, Dr A. H. Wood, said today. Dr Wood's speech on what he termed "the scandalous and wicked system of separated churches" came as a prelude to the operring of the Methodist General Conference in Sydney, on Friday,

Dr Wood revealed the-scenes moves aimed at the carly union of the Congroga- tional, Presbyterian and Method- ist churches.
NO DIFFERENCES
He sald meetings had been held between representatives of the three churches, to discuss beliefs and the organisation of the churches.
The president of the National Bedding Federation, Mr Stanley Lukes, made this claim at the the annual
of conference federation here.
Mr Laikes said statistics showed that the average man spent £73 a year on smoking, and only 12s öd on his bed.
"Why people continue to sleep on lumpy, bumpy mat. tresses is a mystery to me," he said.
"The same people probably have fine television sets and wonderful fridges'
"But they put their own well- being so low down on their personal priority lists, that they economise on their sleep equip- ment and struggle, on with mattresses fit only for the rub- bish dump."
The result was that Britain was becoming a nation of sleep- walkers,
Because they did not get a good night's sleep "on their an- cient beds with mattresses like cobblestones and springs that twanged in the night, many people got up in the morning unit for the day's work," Mr Lukes said-China Mail Special,

Dr Wood said, "Each church has drawn up a statement of Mr 11s belief and we have found that there are no differences.
"We now are considering the crganisation of a united church, or how it should be governed.
"There are slight differences; of opinion here; but they will be overcome, he addedChina Mail Special

London, May 17. Walter Nash, Prime Minister of New Zealand has laid the foundation stone of what will be his country's new 20 storey headquarters in London.

Commemoration
service
at St Paul's
London, May 17.
The Duke of Edinburgh is to attend a comTM memoration service of thanksgiving in St Paul's Cathedral on June 1 to mark the founding of two ancient seafaring institutions.
The service will mark the sixth centenary of the foundation of the Admiralty Court of England and the eighth centenary of the promulgation of the Laws of Oleron.
At the service a silver gilt casket containing a facsimile reproduction of the ancient laws will be handed over by Lord Merriman, president of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division of the High Court, to the chaplain of the fleet, Archdeacon J. A. Armstrong.
On June 7 the casket will be taken by the frigate HMS Wakeful to the Island of Oleron, near La Rochelle, as a gift to the islanders.
A French patrol vessel L'Opiniatre will arrive in London on May 30 to take part in celebrations while four British coastal minesweepers will attend cele- brations at Oleron.
The Laws of Oleron, based on decisions of the Merchant Court of Oleron, were promulgated by Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Henry II of England about 1160.
They were accepted as maritime law in Western Europe and certain aspects of modern maritime law may be traced directly to them.
The Admiralty Court was founded by King Edward II in 1860 with the appointment of Sir John Beauchamp to be Admiral of all the fleets, with exten- sive judicial powers.-China Mail Special
Wrong diagnosis caused by office chemicals
