IN TEXTBOOK language the Lockheed U-2 is described as a weather reconnaissance plane "designed for extended flight at high altitude." More dramatically it can now be revealed, without fear of contradiction from the White House, that it was primarily designed to put spies in the sky. Tapered wings stretch for 46ft, on either side of the fuselage-painted black in the best traditions of espionage. They can keep the plane, its engine cut, soaring for long spells on the thin edge of space. There, out of range of manned inter- ceptors, the long-range infra-red cameras can click away at the country 12 miles below. This is the Space Age way to go spying.
