The stock market closed mixed today after its four consecutive

advances. Trading was less active.

The market was higher and active at the opening following Wednesday's good gain. Prices improved during the first hour, but profit taking in the second hour cut the gains. Gains were extended again in the early afternoon, but a second round of profit taking left the market mixed at the close.

Most price changes ranged from a few cents to around one dollar a share.

Most of the motors and steels declined after their good rise yesterday. Some chemicalo, rails and selected issues vanced.
