Is this cricket's death?
A GAY SPORT HAS NOW BECOME DULL BUSINESS
By JOHN COTTRELL
On August 29, 1882, Australia defeated the full strength of English cricket on English soil for the first time and the death of English cricket was lamented in an
obituary notice in the Sporting Times.
On April 4, 1960, England's tour of the West Indies will be completed, and I suggest that the occasion should be marked with an obituary notice lamenting the death of the game of cricket itself.
Cricket. as our grandfathers knew it, is dead at least us far as Test matches are concerned. It is no longer a game, but a bitter relentless struggle survival.

OXFORD TO WIN
TODAY'S VARSITY
BOAT RACE
By DEREK JOHN
London, Apr. 2.
There are strong hopes for a thrilling finish and a very fast time in today's 106th Boat Race between Dark and Light Blue oarsmen over the four-and-a-half miles from Putney to Mortlake.
crews have shown ex- Both cellent form in training and while a comparison of practice times can be deceptive, Oxford (Dark Blue) must stand a great chance of winning the race for the second year in succession. They have not done this since 1938.
Experimental rules
I am glad to Ece that the forthcoming England versus South Africa Test will be play- ed under the experimental rules which include limitation of the leg-side field to five men, and cutting out time-wasting and drag.
In particular I welcome time-wast- measures against ing. We want no repetition of the go-slow bowling seen in the Caribbean Testa, where the boweling rate sometimes fell to less than 14 overa an hour.
But no experimental rules can guarantee brighter cricket and unfortunately it will be five-dny Tests as usual. So the onus in- evitably falls on the players themselves.
If they cannot play cricket in the true spirit, "then English cricket-lovers have the answer. They can stay away and watch some of the counties who man- nge to play first-class, sparkling cricket and get results-in three daya.

The incident took place in the English FA Cup semi-inal last Saturday when Blackburn won 2-1. Actually, Finney was unaware Bray was only an arm's length away.
