Russia to pay royalties
to Maugham

Mar. 18. The British novelist, Mr W. Somerset Maugham, will receive royalties from, the Soviet Union for the Russian editions of his novels, a spokesman for Mr Maugham confirmed today.
Mr Maugham is one of the first. Western authors to be paid royalties by the Russians outside the USSR for reprints of West- ern editions.
Since Soviet editions of any book run to 150 million coples in Russia slone, as compared to a fot of 12 to 20 million copies in the entire Western world (in-
United States and cluding the Canada) Mr Maugham, who is paid a small percentage on each book, stands to gain a "eonsider- able sum," the spokesman said.
Up to now the Soviet Union has said it will bay royalties only to Western authors who arc willing to come and spend the money inside Russia-UPI.
