Sir Oliver's politleal back- ground is confined inalaly 10 leftish-liberal thinking and friendship with Mr Ernest Bevin. He came neither from Balliol nor Christ Church, which between them have provided every Oxford Chancellor for the past hundred years with the ex- ception of Goschen and Cave.
He is not even an Anglican. His father was a Congregation- alist professor and he married into a Quaker family. -
