The English Rugby Football Union have banned the use of shoulder pads

In a circular letter to all clubs, bodies and referees' societies in member-
ship, the Union state: "Whatever the circumstances, Irrespective of any doctor's cer- tificate, the wearing of any kind of harness'is prohibited.
"A protective pad may be attached to the body by plaster or down into the Jersey, but it must always be composed of such material that does not Barden in use, but remains soft at all times.
"It is the considered opinion of the Rugby Football Union that any player requiring such protective wear as may be in- jurious to other players should not be playing the game at all." The statement asks clubs
