Olivo-skinned Tommy Beecher, 2, whasa British parents were ordered out of South Africa for adopting him, recently arrived with them at London Airport. The Beachers adapted him when he was found abandoned in a Cape Town church; then local officials decided he was coloured, and ordered: "Giva up the child or go home." So they come home, the £600 air fares paid by father Frank's old union. The Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, to his old job at Epsom. They have two other children.

The dance was performed during a programme of music and dancing from the Common- wealth countries given of the Crone Theatre in connection with Liverpool's Com monwealth Week, recently inaugurated by Princess Margaret.
ABOVE: Splashing their way through a 5-foot doop pond during the British Army Mechanical Transport championship at Bordon in Hampshire are two drivers with their specially waterproofed "Champ” vehicles. The championship--the British Army's "Grand National on Wheels”—was held to find the champion driver of the British Army. Eliminating contests brought down the total of competitors to eight. The Champion driver was Warrant Officer Asbury of the Royal Army Service Corps.

ABOVE: They used to call it the hub of the Empiro. Today it's still the hub of the Commonwealth-which is why the proposed plan for the redevelopment of Piccadilly Circus has created so much fuss that a public inquiry is being held by the Ministry of Housing. Or rather the lack of a plon; for the chief criticism has been launched against the LCC for ollowing a private firm to build a 172-feet high tower block which most architectural experts have con- demned as a monstrosity. ABOVE: After years of hard work by character actor Bernard Miles, raising, funds by public subscription, his Mermaid Theatre, first in the City of London since Shakespeare's day, is now well in the black. The other night Miles himself appeared to stor in the Theatre's Christmas production of "Treasure Island” as Long John Silver accompanied by a parrot called Jack Sprat who has been his inseparable componion over since he was bought six weeks ago.
