The village doctor was crossing the square in Chamonix, Switzerland, when he came face to face with Jacques Balmat, widely acclaimed as the world's most famous moun- taineering guide.

Nearly a year had passed since together the doctor and the guide had soaled the frozen summit of Mont Blanc-the first men ever to do so. And it was the first time in months that they had seen each other.
