Benefits
The committee considered that the benefits of decimal coinage far outweigh long and short-term disadvantages. It would be the first major step in the direction of decimalisation generally and, if adopted. they recommended an inquiry into the desirability of a change to dreimal weight mr measures.
The committee forecast, bow- ever, that the 10s unit, with 10| lower units to the is, would lead to a small initial increase in the communers' price index becaid of the fractional price increases i for some commodities.
"With a completely new upper unit a new name should be coin- ed for it," the report said. "This should be short, simple and it possible distinctively associated with New Zealand.
The 1s, at its unchanged value, would remain and legislation should specify that one-tenth of the upper unit would continue
to be known as the shilling.
