"Well, we don't do too badly in that respect although frankly I sometimes wonder if we do as well as we should," replied Mr Wong, and then added quickly, "bui save your comment of a favourito until Big John gels here. At that moment the cruhch of lyres heralded the big fellow's arrival. From the verandah the sound of John's laughter could be heard quite clearly as he exchanged light-heuried banter with Ars Wong. These two were very old friends, They had known each other for more years than either of

Front the moment John bounced onto the verandah it was obvious

that he was right on top of his form and, onca his`ikirat of the appearance prompt had been relieved by the houseboy, he was clearly ready to hold forth on almost any subject for as long as the others would listen.

"I suppose my good long time friend Wong has warned you about about how I make his life a the terrible monster I am: misery: about how I ruin his best stories: how I upset his domestic affairs by always siding with his charmlog 1 really don't wife but don't you believe a word or it, know what he'd do without me."

As John paused for breath the vialior chipped in with "And he

he had entered for the Walkathon. So you've had it too. I would have been really surprised if he had missed out on that one, Big John interrupted.

Wong smlied quietly behind his upturned glass. He knew what

was coming.

The visitor added towards the harbour and launched his opening should usO comment "Magalileent sight, John.. you

Big John seated himself.comfortably on the edge of the verandah Mr Wong with wall. He took a long drink and cycl suspicion,

"Somehow I feel I'm being let in for something here for it is one of my pet contentions that we don't do nearly as well us we should ni getting big stars and star teams to come to The Colonly.

A Lot Of Talent

"Oh, I know we see some football teams and an occasional circus of tennis slags but an awful lot of tulent gels though I'm not suggesting the area without being exploited here,

of the local organisers. In fact I 1 is always the fault know i isn't, hut having talked to one or two of the non- performers who have been in this part of the world it seems. Hongkong has sometimes been that the approach from made too late.

"However I'm glad to hear that the University rowing crew is going to be here very soon and the Royal Hangkong Yacht Club is dur a pat on the back for their efforts.

"Now 1 come to think of it I've just realised that. I've got newa Khan, the world's out- of other visiting personalities, standing squash player is going to be here quite soon and I understand be will be playing against some of the best players

we have in the Colony, including one or two Services players who have good records.

"I have also beard a whisper that Sir Wavell Wakefield, one of England's greatest rugby @gures both as a player and now as an administrator, is coming hack this way from New and that he will be taking Zealand early In September

They tell me Slr Wavell is a real personally but I'm only sorry he isn't bringing his British Lions rugby team with him to that the Universities Hongkong... and I'm also sorry rugby team which is going to Japan hasn't made's fam date to pay us a visit."

Sporting Tourists

"I don't think these teams should pass us by, Britlah Interests the world over know the importance of sport in this Coleby and I think they should advise sporting tourials to make a special effort to come here. Only a few months ago, liearis, the famous Scottish football team, visited Australla but untike Blackpool, their Torerunners down-under iber didn't stop over in Hongkong and that was a real. disappointment, "The Hongkong Football Association tries very hard to keep us supplied with regular visitors from overseas. The Lawn well in this Tennis Association also does us particularly respect both with professional and amateur players.

"We occasionally get the chance to see some of the world's besi golfers but touring cricketers don't seem to look on us with much favour, although to be fair, I hear that the members of our cricketing fraternity have extended an invitation

"Last year, of course—and I was unlucky enough not to be here-- the brilliant Australian swimming team came to Hongkong atter their long trip to Cardiff. From the glowing reports I have heard fi scema the Swimming Association did a Frand job.

"But qulla iruthfully a pisce ke Hongkong really needs regular visits from overseas exponents of every sport becauso by reason of our geographical situation our players to stalo. or at least they stop making progress-for sheer lack of variety of opposition.

"One of the big anags however is that through lack of co-ordina- tion we sometimes get a clash of attractive visitors and I think our sporis authorities should have some way' of lotting each other know when they are planning big stirne- ilons.
