International swimming veteran Ned Bamio, 62, who coached Gerda for the attempt, dived in as the launch elreled. He helped Gorda to stay añitost. Then 24-year-old motor sales- man Tom Elliot plunged in fully clothed, and helped Ned to aling à rope round her.

They inched their way to the side of the boat. But as wait- ing hands reached over the side her thickly greased body slipped from their grasp,
