London, Mar.
Lord Altrincham, outspoken critic of the monarchy and the Church of England, tonight attacked the Common- wealth as an "unorganised hypocrisy" and a "haphazard collection of sovereign states.”
British, African and West Indian students heard him compare it to an
unsuccessful marriage.
He declared: "A marriage which holds together by means of the partners leading widely separated existences, with agreement only to differ about nearly every- thing that matters, la not a truly successful marriage.
"Ye! that surely is a very fair analogy to the Commonwealth in its present form.* Lord Altrincham was a guest speaker at the West Indian Students' Union headquarters at Earls Court, London. He was proposing a motion that the Commmonwealth should either radically be altered or dissolved.

Fears For Press
Freedom In
New French Code
Paris, March 2.
France's most sweeping judicial reform since the Napoleonic Code was instituted 155 years ago comes into force today.
French newspapers have ex- pressed misgivings about the effect on Press freedom ot
the rigid application of
nev code.
The most controversial part deals with the procedure from the beginning of a police in- quiry to the trial of an ZC- cused person.
Up to now a atitpect could be detained and questioned br the police for several days before being brought before the examining magistrats who decides whether the case Ahould go to trial. From today, a suspect or t wilness cannot be held by the police for more than 24 hours without the wrillen authority of the publle prosecutor, and he has the right to a medicnt examination.
Suspicion
One code article affirms the principle of the secrecy of the police enquiry and the magl, strate's hearings to prevent un just suspicion falling publicly on innocent people.
But French journalists con- tend that pubilé opinion plays its part in ensuring Justice.
