IN this brittle business of singing popular songs, IN

where reputations are made overnight and are smashed as easily as the records they are built on, one man stays right up there at the top. He is the undisputed king of them all, the man who is imitated and hero-worshipped by a regular fan club of stars, the very prototype of every amateur bathroom baritone--Bing Crosby.

N the last lap, the runner seems to be tiring. In his proclaimed ultimate book, Maugham exhibits not.indeed carelessness--but the take- it-or-leave-it negligence of an author who has, long since, earned his right to a hearing.

The customary terseness of his style, corresponding to the atringency of his temperamont, hardens into a mannered and eurt monotony:

Now it only remains for someone to record "The Skiffle Rock Kwela Calyso Mambo Cha-Cha."

CONFLICT

Unfortunately, Mrs Lancaster's ʊwn account gives un no inkling. It amounts to nothing more than #ro-hash of the carlier week-- and an oddiy condicting re-hash at that.

The most serious of the many Inconsistencles is that, according to Mrs Lancaster, it was not shë but Jane who married Earl Lan- canter. She herselt came into being only when the 'marriago was on the point of broaking up and Jano was attempting to commit suleide,
