Of Suicide

Financial difficulties drovė more people to suicide last year than any other single

causo.

Figures published in the report of the Director of Social Welfare, Mr D. W. B. Baron show that 35 people took their own lives because of financial difficulties, while another 265 attempted suicide but wäre prevented for the same reason.

Domestic Strife Twenty-four people committed suicide because of domestic

strife and another 267 attempted.

Ill-henith caused 12 people to take their lives and another

61 attempted.

The figures showed that more women than men attempted

suicide.

A total of 659 people attempted suicide during the year

and 74 killed themselves.

"CATHERINE,” a play wsit- ton for radio, was the second play to be contributed by Radio Hongkong, as their contribution to the Festival of Arts.

I suppose that a Festival of Arts is the place to experiment, providing that you have already

gained a public informed in the tradition of the Briush stage, but with cur steadily declining standard in all forms of drama, I should have pre- fered to have heard an establish- ed play with a wider appeal to

the radio listeners,

The bridge between what is called popular append and the - Bris, is not to wide that it cannot be bridged by a few well selected dramas, but until we form a drama appreciating Public again, we shall go from bad to worse.
