England's Captain Heads The List

By NORMAN YARDLEY

(Former England and Yorkshire captain),

My selection of "five cricketers of the year" will probably not coincide with anybody else's; but as I've good reason for evory pick I've made I don't intend to lose any sleep over differences.

My big five are: PETER MAY, COLIN INGLEBY-MACKENZIE, WILLIE WATSON, GODFREY EVANS and FREDDIE TRUE- MAN. I name them because all five have contributed so much to this wet and weary season.

PETER MAY heads the ilst pionship his polley and leader- because of the new standard of ship has provided. balemariship he has set up. For three years Poter has been very close to batting greatness. This aaron I hellove he has achieved

Hard Hitter

A former captain of Eton, Colin does not pretend to be a great or a classle batsman, But he has a wonderful eye ond tremendous arm strength, and when he gets going you don't see the ball hit harder.

Already he has hit two of the fastest hundreds of the reason and the one he cracked in 1 minutes still looks like winning that £100 prize.

There is an amusing story behind that 1-minute hundred,

I say he has stepped into that grade only this season, because it has been only during the last few months that I have seen | It was hit after a lively party him develop into the completely Colin attended-a party which comanding batsman. Before, he kept him out of bed the whole was the controlled perfection- of the night! ist. The shot which kept af along the ground was his aim all though an innings, But now

WILLIE WATSON joins our distinguished gallery for the splendid work he has dono for lowly Leicestershire. When he left Yorkshire to take over and aces it so clearly that the A colleague gave him a shake, the captaincy of his new club

batting in the new atmosphere FIRST TIME IN THE COLONY!!!

a point marly Yorkshire folk must have noted with knowing nods,

A bateman as finely drawn as WElle, can't give his best in the wrong atmosphere. In the tension of the York- shire camp last year he was almost driven out of the game. Now, in new and happy surroundings, he is a greater player than ever.

Fantastic Character

GODFREY EVANS must come into the top five of the year because this very week he sets up world record as the first men ever to appear in 80 Test matches. It is a fantasile per- formance by 3 fantastic character who was only 38 on Monday,

Without a doubt, Godfrey Is the greatest wicket-keeper I have ever seen, and must be about the greatest of all time. I have played with him and agalust him many times and have never failed to marvel at the incredible vitality he main- tains throughout the toughest or hottest day.

Added to that inborn genius for wicket-keeping, which must be there in any specialiat of his aiature, I would say that God- frey's greatest nsset has been his tremendous physleat strength and finess.

It was a toss up, you will re- member, whether he became a pro cricketer or pro boxer; he did, in fact, win six out of seven pro fights by the shortest possible method! So he has always moved well and tast!

I hope he keeps on to com- pleto his century of Test match appearances. He has been a vital faclor in England's run at the top of world cricket.

FREDDIE TRUEMAN comes Chinoso Croods & Customs Vol, i into my five because I believe Chinoso Creeds & Customs Vol. II he is one of the most Improved

bowlers in the country. Maybe theo is a slight Yorkshire Pre Judice in it, too; but honestly, Freddle is now a really good fast bowler.

Ho still has his great strength und physical endurance; but he also has complete control of Cat ne action of his. He is now almost as accurate as Briary

Stathor, yet he can move the ball about a great deal more.

A lot of people tell me that Australian wickets will tame I don't think they Freddie, will. He knows he'll have to graft for his wickels out there and he's prepared to do it.

And it could be that Britain's wet summer will have given him the eary season ho neoded to build up the energy required. So far he has only bowled about `600 overs--agalrish a normal of DATOR 1,000. Look out Australia!
