The Browning Version

"Wednesday Theatre" at nine o'clock features that popular play by Terence RattiganThe Browning Version." First produced on the stage shortly after the war it tells the story of an elderly school master Andrew Crocker-Harris who is given to making puns in Latin at which his class, no longer laughs. Obliged to retire without a pension, his 1st is not made casier by his nagging wife Millie who is also unfaithful to him. Aware that he is no longer liked by his class, Crocker-Harris is non-the-less shocked to hear himself described as "The Himmler of the Lower Fifth." Then on the eve of his retirement, John Taplow, one of the boys, brings him a parting gift-Robert Browning's verse translation of the Agamemnon....THE BROWNING VERSION. The main part of Crocker-Harris is played in this BBC' production by Robert Harris.
