New Rules To Control
Australian Runner Shatters World Three-Mile Record
Dublin, July 9.
Australia's Albert Thomas set a new world record for three miles when he was clocked in 13 minutes, 11 seconds on the Cioncliffe Harriers track tonight.
Thomas' time bettered the previous mark of 13:14.2 set by Sandor 1hacos of Hungary, In 1955.
Thomus led most of the way followed by Merv Lincoln, another Australian.
Entering the third mile Thomas opened up a gap between himself and Lincoln. It became obvious to the crowd of 7,000 that a new record was being set and they roared themselves hourse.
TERRIFIC STRUGGLE
For the first two miles it was a terrific struggle between Thomas and Lincoln with the little Irish champion, 1. Messitt, in close attendance,
Thomas had 250 yards to spare as he breasted the tape with a terrific finishing burst to beat Lin- coln with Messit in third place.-U.P.I.
