Germany's Growing The New
Passenger Fleet
Berlin.
Germany is slowly regaining her strong pre-war position in the North Atlantic passenger trade. Until the beginning of the 1939-1945 war, the Hamburg Amerika Line was the biggest shipping company in the world, and such liners as the Bremen and Europa held the Blue Riband of the Atlantic. But after the war, Germany had to start, rebuilding her
fleet from scratch.
The recent purchase of passenger liners scoond-hand signifies Germany's desire to resume her old place in the Fossenger market.
In January, 1939, the German neet totaller? about 4.4 million gross tone. At the end of 1946 it was no more than 105,000 inna. Today it has recovered to about 3.5 million tons; this com- per cent. of prises about 3.1 total world tonnage, against 0% per cent. in 1030.

Washington, Feb. 26. Congressman Albert. W. Cretella (Republican, Connecticut) today appealed in a letter to Pre- sident Eisenhower for a quota to restrict Japanese and other imports of stainless steel flatware into the United States.
He said the figures presented to the U.S. Tariff Commission, which asked the President to in- crease protection for the domes- tie industry, were "accurate and staggering.
