Richard Nixon today characterised as "unmitigated nonsense" pessimistic reports of the military and economic strength of the United States. "We are hearing a lot of pessimistic talk today to the effect that the United States is weaker than the Soviet Union, that our Strategic Air Force is obsolete because of the successful Soviet satellite launchings and that our scientists are inferior," he said in a speech
