Of

Duncan Edwards was born in Dudley, Worcestershire, on October 1, 1936, a big bouncing babe who right from the cradle promised to grow into a giant. He was always a big boy and from the moment he could walk he was foot- ball mad and never had any other idea than to be a professional footballer. Strangely enough, although sur- rounded by such clubs as Wolves, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City and Aston Villa, his ambition never lay in their particular direction.

In fact, there was no particular club which could claim his undying loyalty his only ambition was to play in the same team as his idol, Stanley Matthews. Little did he know that one day that ambition would be fulfilled, when both were playing for England against Scotland.
