At the start of the season, barely a month ago, the outlook for ladies' softball was anything but encouraging, but after a bit of coaxing and cajoling on the part of certain interested parties the "girls" finally overcame their reluctance and once again interest has been revived amongst the fairer sex. They come in for their share of publicity when four ladies' teams match beauty and brawn this week- end to give spectators a preview of what ladies' softball has in store for us this year.

The battle to preserve amateurism, which has been fought almost continuously and often heatedly since the Grecks frowned on "paid gladiatora" a couple of thousand years ago. gels more and more complicated. Money is to be used to keep it alive. And offlefally, too. From Sofia, Bulgaria, where the International Olympic Committee have just held congress, we learn that an Olympic athlote may now officially receivo "broken time" payments. This means that he can be compensated for loss of earnings through training for and competing in the game.
