The trees came down, and the spray want up. But from whichever direction the storm's projectiles camo, it was not a time to be out, motoring.

And it wasn't a time to be at sea either. The normally crowded sopwalls wore empty. Instead, typhoon shaltors

were crammed with croaking wooden cities, boats lashed

to each other, and battoned down against the wind.

A lady this week said over -the phone... "I'm sorry. I

can't drive you,' A treo ran'; {"Into."our car.” ~ And all over Hongkong the trees, or parts of them, were doing just about that. Unfortunately some of the casualtios wero, among the oldest.

While Hongkong was cut off From Kowloon and little ships, lashed together carpeted the typhoon shelters like Canadion timber rafts, big ones put out to ride the storm at 100, or strained at their moorings. Two wont aground, one near tho Kowloon Docks, and the Tjibantjot on rocks at Lyamun. Passengers and crow werd rescued after a 12-hour ordoa!, and the ship has lain there alt week while divors survey her bottom.

Kowloon lost another of her ancient Banyans. And the Hongkong Shanghai Bank lost "Old Faithful"... Royal Palm to which hor Fortunes were linked by legend. The story goes...when the last palm falls, the bank will close. Old Falthful was the last of the old Royal Palms that guarded har. A section is to be polfthed and kept as a memento. A successor has been ordered from Singapore. Other small palms now keep guard. Successful? The bank is still in business!

Five people ware killed, a hundred were injured, and many hundreds were rendored' homeless at a time when "Home" was the place to bo Rats and kittens were flooded in the gutters as 100-mile-an-hour gusts awept down the streets and ripped scaffolding from new buildings. Some people wondered what became of the street sleepers... that pretty girl with two tiny 'babies who lives on the corner of Christ- church, and the old men in Wyndham Street who sleep in brown paper? And some people wondered whore insects and birds go in such a storm? Yot somehow, most of them survive.
