But Bid For Another Two-Day Victory Fails

London, Aug. 19.

Surrey, though assured of the County Cricket Cham- pionship, showed no signs of slackening the pace when they gained a winning position over Middlesex at Lord's today.

With Alec Bedser taking three wickets in four balls, Surrey seemed to be heading for their ninth two-day victory of the season, but they were thwarted by two young batsmen, A. C. Walton, the Oxford Univer sity captain, and Fred Titmus.

The reason for the change is that the

SURREY IS THE TOUGHEST AND BEST CRICKET SIDE I HAVE EVER SEEN

Says BRUCE DOOLAND

After five years with Nottinghamshire I am going back home to Australia in October...for good. But if rumours are seeping your way suggesting that there has been anything wrong or unhappy between me and the Notts club squash them fast. I couldn't have had a pleasanter bunch of people to work for, and with, anywhere in the world.

The club offered me a renewal of contract and I turned it down the other week purely and simply for domestic reasons. What so many people do not realise is that we cricketers have families, and family life, to consider I have three youngsters growing up. The eldest boy is 11 and both my wife and I feel it would be the right thing to get back home now and see him through his schooling without further in- terruption. We have another boy of seven and the little girl is two.

I have known.

LAKER PROTESTS ABOUT THE LACK OF FIRST CLASS GAMES IN AUGUST

By ARCHIE QUICK

Jim Laker, the England and Surrey spin bowler, has protested in a national newspaper that when London is full of visitors in August, Lord's is devoid of first class games-empty except for the matches between Schools and Services. He points out that from July 24 until the end of the season in September, there are only three first class fix- tures at the St John's Wood headquarters of the game Middlegex ▼ Leicestershire, Surrey and Worcestershire.

Laker feels that hundreds of visitors to the Metropolis from Oversens and the provinces would like the attraction of County Championship games, and that the calendar should be altered. That the traditional games of Eton v Harrow, Clifton v Malvern, Army v Royal Navy or Royal Air Force, Royal Engineers v Royal Artillery and Beaumont v Oratory should be supplanted by Middlesex versus someone or the other. He adds that too many of the big games Sussex v Middlesex, Kent v Hampshire, Nottinghamshire v Surrey are traditionally played out of Town on. the holiday occasions of Whitsun and August.
