JEWELS ARE THE MILESTONES ALONG HER PATHWAY TO FAME
A Star Dancer With An Expensive Hobby
0
by CECILIA FENG, CHINA MAIL FEATURE WRITER
NE woman who loves beauty in any form, be it a flower or a painting, thinks that nothing can make her species look more beautiful and elegant than a piece of jewel- lery to complement her dress.
Miss Julia Darvas, a young dancer from Istanbul, has been collecting jewels as a hobby since she was in her late teens. Her multi- farious collection is doubly precious to her because it is the fruit of her industry and perseverance; it is also a nostalgic reminder of many an exotic scene.

SLIGHTLY LESS HOT TODAY
Moderate winds for to- day and tomorrow are likely according to the Royal Obser- vatory, so that it will be less hot than the previous two days, but no real relief is promised.
"It will be still un
comfortably warm, around the 90s," says the Forecaster, Mr. John Peacock,
At noon the tempera- ture registered "87.3 degrees which is slightly lower than yesterday's 89.5 de grees at noon. But the temperature is expected to go over 90 degrees again this afternoon.
Yesterday atfernoon it renched 92.3 and the day before 92.6.

Mr Peacock attributes the high tempera- tures of the last two days mainly to the fact that the wind was light that there was practically sea breeze. While there are "winds of about 11 knots to- day, there were winds of only two or tiree knots yester day practically -breathless day.

Look How The Colony's Road Toll Has Risen
by J. P. Prettejohn ›
China Mail Reporter
ÎN 1956, traffic accidents in the Colony were responsible for 131 deaths and 4,290 persons injured, though a large number of the victims received only minor injuries. Twenty years before that, in 1936, those who died beneath the wheels of motor vehicles in Hongkong numbered 75 while the more fortunate ones who escaped with injuries totalled 1,100.
Apparently an alarming jump, but as Mr A. S. Morrison, Superintendent of Traffle, point- ed out many factors have to be considered.
Mr Morrison cited the record which showed that 20 years ago there were 4,605 vehicles on the roads. The number of drivers was estimated to be slightly larger than the number 01 registered vehicles.
The population, too, was arr- other factor which contributed to the increase in the accident rate and in 1930, the population was very inuch is today,
