Rice Highest
Since War
Washington, July 31.
The United States Department of Agriculture reported today that world trade in rice during 1956 increased 15 per cent over 1955 and reached the highest level since World War Two.
The Department said, in a report on foreign crops and markets, that "rice exports, including re-exports, came to 13,254,000,000 pounds in terms of milled rice compared with 11,567,000,000 in 1955.
However, this still is only two-thirds uf the prewar average trade which is figured on the basis of 1036 through 1940.
The 1950 increase resulted principally from accumulated surpluses from previous crop years plus new-crop rice in countries outside of Asia," the Department reported.
