With news regularly coming out of the Chinese People's Republic on outstanding performances in track and field athletics and swimming, the world outside the largest of nations has now for two years been wondering about the general standard of sport there.

When more than 500 million people have their first real taste of organised and state-pushed sport for the first time in history, it would seem that sheer numbers should produce a good sprinkling of world class athletes.
