MODERN AGE WYNDHAM STREET KEEPS ITS

OLD-FASHIONED TRIMMINGS

The picture above taken by our Staff Photographer is familiar to everyone. It is a view of present-day Wyndham Street, the Colony's "Fleet Street". But few today will remember the scene on the right which is Wyndham Street about 50 years ago, with its sedan chairs and flower stalls,

which looks more like the work of dentist's forceps than a demolition squad, marks the end of the his- toric block which once housed the China Mail office in No. 5.

Seven Storeys

Facing this site is the seven-storey Victory House which is another post-war addition to Wyndham Street. This was built in 1947 on the site of a build- ing that was bombed during the Japanese occupation. According to newspaper files it was either the first or one of the first buildings to be put up in the Central District after the re-occupa- tion.

Farther up Wyndham Street in the terrace, No. 21 has been demolished. This looks out on the old Dairy Farm ice works which, on the Wyndham Street-Lower Albert Road corner, itself looks out on the destruction of another part of old Hong- kong -- one of the stately Glenealy buildings opposite St Paul's Church,

He was found guilty. It was his first conviction,

"What sort of job?"

"Kitchen porter's all I'm sultable

"Well, we'll try to help you." Sir Laurence said, "but before we can do that properly, I'll get a medical report about you. See?"

Jim nodded and left for the remand prison, where
