Signs Of Revolt

NIGNS are growing that the

rulers of the Communist puppet stute of East Germany uro becoming frightened and angry met. They have many reasons for anxiety, among them the grave economic difficulties .which beset the country ami the increasing discontent with the existing regime being manifested by workers and Intellectunia.

Herr Bruno Leuschner, chair- man of the State Planning -Committee, has admitted

that the economic plan for 1957 in trouble, partly due

delays to placuting throughout the Soviet bloc. Conl and steel are short because Poland has cut supplies, while Russia has not increased them sufficient- iy. Yet while the govern- ment insists that production Laska must be fulfilled, it simultaneously announces reductions In consumer goods, including food and fuel. Thus the workers are made aware of lowering living standards.

Among students and young people disillusionment and discontent with the Com- munist regime is spreading. Significantly three students have recently been expelled from their universities · fur decrying the East German youth organisation, refusing to learn Russian, and public- ly approving the Hungarian uprising. But the degree to East German which tho
