Putting British Soccer Back On The Map

By DON REVIE

Nothing can hide the fact that England's national game needs a shot in the arm to put it back on top in this New Year of 1957.

Well, what do you look forward to most in 1957? I'll tell you what targets I should like to see reached this year.

A new approach to the problem of the missing millions. As the old year went out, it was plain to see that falling attendances mean that many clubs will be in the red by the end of this season. How can we bring back these stay-at-home spectators who prefer watching television by the fireside to spending chill afternoons on the terraces?

Many followers of racing may not know that even in these days there are still races for which horses must be entered before they are born. The Derby is not one of these and entries for the 1960 Derby do not have to be made until the autumn of 1958,

However, entries for the 1960 Column Produce Stakes, run at the Newmarket Craven meeting, for three- three-and-a-half year-olds, closed in December-nearly years before the race is run.
