young explorers Oxford and Cam- bridge Universities arrived in London yesterday at the end of a 30,000-mile expedition to the Far East and back, including the first ever overland journey through
of the jungles Burma and Thailand to Singapore.
The expedition, which set out Manost a year ago, took faint aix months to cover the 18,000 mile overland route to Singapore in two. Land Rovers. The only time they left the road was for the 20 minutes air flight across the English Channel and a ton- minuto ferry trip OCTOES the Bosphorus.
They travelled through 21 countries and carried σul geographical studies of develop- incrit projects In Pakistan, Burma and India.
The members of the expedi lon were Adrian Cowell, whose family comes from Hongkong;
Antony Barrington Brown, Henry Nott, Pat Murphy
and Jim Slessor,
frost Cam- bridge, and Nigel Newbery of Oxford.
TOUGHEST PART
Toughest part of the trip. Slessor said, was the journey from India into Burma over a disused, jungle-grown wartime road which has lain unused for the past ten years.
Although the expedition used only two sets of tyres in each of their cars during the rugged round trip, they had some bad moments on the journey home through Afghanista where "they seem to spread nails as a national hobby," Slossor said.
Splitting up for part of homeward Journey, three of the expedition carried out investiga- tions into minemi development in Burma, and worked
on kri.. gation projects in India and Pakistan.
