MONDAY

Great Britain beat Czechoslovakia in both international matches at the White City, London, on August 4' and 6, the men winning by 119 points to 93 and the women by 58 points to 46. There were several highly en- couraging performances by the British athletes but in the invitation Emsley Carr Mile, Ibbotson stole all the thunder with a time of 3min. 69.4sec., exactly the same as that of R. G. Bannister in his epic race ating as HKCC at 0.50 pan. Oxford in 1954.

The holder of the AAA Three Miles title, Ibbotson became the ninth man to beat four minutes for the Mile and his fire and speed were quite astounding even to He found his victory those who knew of his training run in 4m in. 4,4sec, last year. and performance rather amusing, for he made the utmost of the pacing provided by Clarke, Gordon and Distey for Boyd and was ideally placed at the bell.
