This remarkable character is described in some detail during the lengthy pre liminaries to the actual performance.
The entire cast of Hilda's opera is female It gives her, she tells us, an opportunity of enshrin- ing in a single work the whole of English woman- hood -
English women, she considers, are in general very common diatonic little numbers, quite unlike, say, the women of North Africa.
The heroine of the opera, Emily Butter, in a little shop assistant, who has lived a life quite cut off from reality. A highlight of the production is when, in Act 7, Emily gets herself locked in the lift (with the opening and closing of the lift gates delicately under- lined by crashes on the harpsichord).
