MARCH 7 WILL GO DOWN IN SPORTING HISTORY AS A LANDMARK IN FOOTBALL
Says ARCHIE QUICK
March 7, 1956, will go down in the sporting history books as a landmark in football. For the first time in the game there has been strike action. The momentous occasion was enacted in the dressing rooms of Wolverhampton Wanderers when the club's 35 professionals who were present supported Players' Union Chairman Jimmy Guthrie and his Committee in their ban on floodlight and TV matches without extra pay. vote the Wolves' Directors As a consequence of their unanimous immediately cancelled their proposed match with the Spanish club Bilbao on March 14.
But this is a strike with a slight difference. The players know that the directors of almost every club in the country are on their side in this fight for "overtime" wages. The Wolves' players know, tacitly, that their Board agree with their demands but cannot pay them because of the Football League rules.
