In Britain derived considerable assialance over the past few years from € 1,000,000

the over world, the Common wealth has

remained its best market. Of an export produc tion value of £2,250,000 in 1954, Commonwealth distribution was as follows: Australia £480,000, South Africu £168,000, New

achieved despite

import restrictions and foreign competition, illustrate that British watch and clock-makers are bolding their own and will increasingly be able to supply good, rellable, cheap watches for Britons at home, for the Coin- monwealth and for foreign markets.

NYLON IN INDUSTRY

One of

the oldest industrial Arms in the East of Scotland is now making extensive use of the newest synthetic breu, nylon and Terylene. The Edin- Sallcolth burgh Roperlo and

Company Ltd, which can trace its history back to the year 1750, and famous for ropes and sall- cloth in

hemp, fax, mantia, sisal and jute, has, since 1945, made increasing use of man~ made fibres.

The first factory in Britain for the manufacture of nylon was opened In 1941, and ropemakero were early interested in some of

the fibre's qualities. It did not rot, was resistant to wide range of chemicals, absorbed very little water, it could be spun with very little wastage, and had far more elasticity than any known natural fibre,

For example, a 120-fathoms nylon rope of seven-incli circum- ference and 1,034 pounds weight took the same breaking load- 481⁄2 tons--os a vegetable abro rope of the same length, which weighed 2,891 pounds and was 12 Inches in circumference,

Wartime Uses

Among the wartime uses to which nylon was put was tho manufacture of crash neis for aircraft carriers, which had to

be strong enough to stop aircraft without damaging them; it was also used for parachute corde and mooring ropes for ships,

While nylon rope is initially dearer than the natural fibre, ifa durability is much greater, A nylon towing rope, for instance, has been in use for six years, while a sisal rope used for the samo purpose had to be renewed every three months.

Fishing nots and lines of nylon eliminate many of the fisher- men's problems of drying and storing, and whalers have found that the increased strength and elasticity of nylon is of advant→ age to them also-one whaler has used the same lino for, the capture of 80 whales.

Ropes of nylon are also véry much in favour with climbers, and they were used by thể mucocutul British Everest ex pedition of 1958, The Leith factory has been equipped with the Inbest spinning, twisting

ond weaving machinery, specially designed to proces

Bbr and here it is also woven into fabrics to be made up. Infa domegle or industrial overalia
