Rio de Janeiro, Jan. 12.
Years ago, in the welter of popular songs which appeared at the time, was one with a theme which emphasised that there is "an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.”
That is as true today as the day the song was written. The Brazilian coffee trade, which helps to provide for the world the
beverage which has been variously described
"celestial ambrosia," and "the symbol of human brotherhood" is still the main prop of the country's economy.
It has known better times and there was a period bo- tween the two World Wars when, to keep prices up, coffee wila foxt Into furnaces in Brazil. Today, however, one of the trade's main features is a wholesale form of racketearing which everyone knows about.
