ENGLAND GET THE GOALS BUT LACK THE GUILE
Says ERIC
NICHOLLS
"England crush Spain 4-1," was the "neutral" heading in French evening newspapers after the November 30 Wembley battle in the fog. I can see it all. Every footballer from Lands End to Leningrad, from Peterborough to Penang will be talking of England's soccer recovery.
But whon there! It just isn't so.
True, England won, and won well. True, they showed more goal-thrust than for muny a year. But that was about the only department in which they slood head and shoulders above the opposition.
A mediocre England beat GL por Spain. That is my verdict Spain were once a World soccer power. That they no longer are was glaringly obvious at Wern- bley and in Dublin, where they drew 2-2 with Eire.
1
Spain built up attack ufler attack with typient Continental 12 and
Football. Thus they failest miserably in their quest for goals, was die to their own shortcomings ruthen the excellence of the defence.

SOCCER SIDE
Edited By James Connolly & Sam Leitch
Archie Macaulay, former Scotland and Arsenal wing-half, is to return to Scotland as coach to Dundee after 18 years in English soccer.
Macaulay resigned last week from his player-manager job with Guildford. He had a five-year contract at £1,000 a year.
Willie Thornton, Dundee's manager, is an old Glasgow Rangers team-mate of Macaulay.
A Midnight New Year Ceremony To Welcome Olympic Games Year
Melbourne.
A midnight riverside ceremony will be held in Melbourne on New Year's Eve to dedicate the year 1966 to the spirit of Christianity and Olympic ideals.
The Games organisers are making plans for a mass rally of 100,000 people in Alexandra Park, across the River Yarra, within walking distance of the main Games sites.
