Chessboard Love Duel Re-Enacted
The living chess game which has been carried out annually in the square of Marostica, Italy, for 400 years is pictured, in progress. Legend states that 400 years ago two noblemen, Rinaldo de Angarano and Viera de Vallonera, fell in love with the daughter of the governor and decided to duel for her hand. The Governor. heard of the arrangement, had the two arrested and decided that the duel should be over the chessboard. Rinaldo won, and the marriage was so happy that it was decided to re-enact the chess game every year, the descendants of the original.

Washington, Sept. 20.
Western diplomats are ready to make strong efforts at the United Nations General Assembly opening today to break the East-West deadlock which has debarred Japan and a large group of other eligible nations from membership in the United Nations.
Hope is running high in diplomatic quarters here that the five-year deadlock might be broken with action on the so-called Bandung candidates - Japan, Ceylon, Cambodia, Jordan, Laos, Libya, Nepal and a unified Vietnam--during the coming session.
