Diplomatic sources said today that releases of Japanese war criminals held by the Western allies would put new pressures on the Soviet Union and Communist China to free several thousand Japan- esc imprisoned there for war crimes.

These sources said the "more liberal approach" which the allies were taking concerning war crimes prisoners held under their jurisdiction in the Sugumo prison in Tokyo would probably strengthen the Japanese demands on the Communists in the current negotiations on prisoners.

Since August 31, the United States has released 22 of the 210 war criminals held under its jurisdiction In Japan, and the Netherlands has rejcased 19 of the 131 prisoners it holds.

Mr Justice A. D. Scholes at the rape trial this morning overruled an objection by the Crown to a Defence question put to complainant whether it was taken for granted that dance hostesses from her ballroom were taken out by customers for immoral purposes.

The question was asked of Li Kwok-ying, alias Hung Mei, 24-year-old dance hostess, during the second day of her cross-examination.

She replied, "No,” to the question, after the objec- tion had been dealt with.
