In a bid to avert an open rift, the union leaders invited the militant men of the north to send delegates to the London members' meeting.

The acting General Secretary, Mr Bil Newman said after the meeting that the decision to suspend the strike on June 27 was "overwhelmingly adopted."

He added that they would recommend this action "to the men l the northern ports as it was the wish of the meeting that a return to work in all ports must be simultaneous.”
