This Bid Used To -Shut Foe Out

A

By OSWALD JACOBY

N opening bid of four hearts

is an attempt to shut the opponents out of the bidding. Such a bid usually shows loss than a standard opening bid so far as high-card strength is concerned.

It's important to remember, however, that you can't afford to bid for ten tricks just because you'd like to shut the opponents out. They still have the right to double your bid, and if you lack the proper values you may wish that you were back home, sale in your warm little bed.

In today's hand, for example, South

made his shutout bid

when he was vulnerable against

non-vulnerable opponents.

Both of them held on to each other. They went tumbling down the stairs. They found them- selves sitting on the bottom steps in a daze: They felt the wind whizzing over their heads.

The Wind Went Away "How can we get the wind out of here?" Teddy asked, rubbing his head.

Before Knarf, had a chance to answer, they both heard the door alam shut. Everything quieted down. The wind was gone!

"It was a mistake to let the wind into the house," said Knart. Just blew in by itself," said Toddy

"Look," said Knarf, pointing out through the window, "the wind is blowing away. It's going some other place."

Far over on the other side of the river, Knari and Teddy could see a fag waving with all its might. But in the garden the trees didn't whip their branches around any more, and the man came back with his hat, on his herd.
