SOCCER SEASON IN RETROSPECT

THE PREMIER HONOURS

WENT TO THE TEAM THAT

י'

DESERVED THEM MOST

Says I. M. MacTAVISH

It is appropriate that in this hot humid weather I should be writing my seasonal Au revoir to affairs of football. The normal season is now over and although our good friends in the Chinese community will be carrying on for a few extra weeks I think this is the ideal time to glance back over the season and see how the salient features look in retrospect.

The immediate thought that comes to mind is that the premier honours went to the team that deserved them most. No side ever really came within a mile of South China in efficient team work, or in the individual brilliance of its players. With very few exceptions they held all the aces. They had the skill, the determination and the Midas touch that time and time again turned half a chance into a vital golden goal.

In Tang Sheung, Ho Cheung-1 right up to the closing days of paucity you and Yiu Cheuk-yin they had the season. three brilliant players who were -individually or in concert

of turning the whole capable course of a game with a flash of genius, or a touch of inspira- tion that left the opposition flat footed,

ان

The public acclamation Tong Sheung in his election to the top of the Footballer of the Year' poll was fitting reward for some great football from a still greater sportsman. Many 10lks will doubtless want to regard | the nomination as a reward for ability but I believe it is prob- ably even more an acknowledg- ment for his impeccable conduct, and his his

the unswerving adherence to rules as they were meant to be interpreted.

Since be announcement in the China Mail last Saturday that Tong Sheung was top of the poll I have not heard a single contrary opinion, and it is Atting that the public should take this the timely opportunity to pur seal on his career for he is to be married this month and there is no doubt that the trophy that goes with his nomination will a special place in his favoured possessions.
