Turkey has taken the lead in a far reaching scheme aimed at setting up a Middle East defence organisation.

When Turkey's dynamic Prime Minister, Mr. Adnan Menderes, signed the Turco-Iraqi pact of mutual co-operation last January, he had, according to Turkish diplomats, taken the first step towards setting up a full fledged defence organisation covering the entire area from the Eastern Turkish-Soviet border to the frontier of Pakistan.
