Let's discuss the bidding first. North had a sound opening bid and and a sound raise to two spades. These two bids showed a count of 13 to 10 points, including dis- tribution as well as high cards.

South had only 9 points, with no distributional strength. It was easy for him to see that the combined strength was 23 points. at most. Hence South should have passed at two spades.

When South actually bid two no-trump.." North might have passed. "And when North actual ly bid three

spades, South should have passed. North would have bid four spades instead of only three if he had his maxi- mum value of about 16 points.
