Learn When to Use Important Double

By OSWALD JACOBY

WHEN today's hand was play- ed in a recent tournament, West doubled two hearts with more enthusiasm than discre- tion. The double would be very bact in a rubber bridge game, but not really horrible in dup Ileate play.

West opened the king of kpaden, und South won with the vice. South returned the king of diamonds to West'a ace, and West desperately switched 10 clubs. South ruffed tho third

club for the ten of hearts, and West overruffed with the jack.

For lack of anything better to do, West returned the queen of spades, forcing dummy 10 ruff. Declarer got to his hand with the Jack of diaments and should have led one high trump at this point. Instead, however, he ruffed another spade in dum- my and led the queen of dia- monds to discard his last spade.

West ruffed with the three of hearts, thus taking the fifth des fensive trick. One other trick

was needed to defeat the con- track, but it was hard to se what would produce It.

a notion that for little boys to play with dolla is alsay, and the more so if these boys con tinue playing with 'dolls' as they grew older. Since this notion is so prevalent, boys over seven or eight might be shunned by some other boys of their age.
