'SPURS. ASTON VILLA

THE CHINA MAIL, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1954.

Brooks of 'Spurs (second from left) makes an attack on the Aston Villa goal in the League match at White Hart Lane and a Villa defender heads the ball away, This match provided an interesting sidelight for the 'Spurs team included Danny Blanchflower, their recent £30,000 capture from Aston Villa, who was playing against his old club in his first home game for Tottenham. The match ended in a one-all draw.

Consistency Counts Most The League Short For The Championship

Says TOM FINNEY

Last week I offered a short list for the FA Cup-Portsmouth Chelsea, Man- chester United, Huddersfield, Wolves and Preston. This week, with the League programme now in its second-half, I offer you the same six as a short list for the Championship (plus two or three others), stressing my firm conviction that cannot expect any of them to win both trophies. What Aston Villa achieved 1896-97 seems to be almost impossible in these hectic days.

The first quality of a potential Championship side must be consistency. The Cup can be won by a short series of sudden spurts, aided by the luck of the draw, but not the League championship.

Consistency comes from sound tactics and good players In alt positions. I Bke to see two first- class wing huff-backs and two top-rate Inside-forwards. They are the baris

the of success! pivot around which the whole team revolves. If the tarties are outstanding, the wing half-bocks often and inside-forwards can furn an average side into a suc- cessful one.

DEFENCE NEEDED Another important quality in #side chasing a Championship is strong defence.

I would Uke do add two teuma to the six I have already men-

Sunderland have been a fine side of individuals for a season or two, Now they have become a well-blended tour with the ability to VOTTUN the best of opposition.

Manchester City are producing a very the type of football, with Don Revle, the contre-forward, playing behind the rest of his Time. They may costly build on the experience gained in the first half of the reason by shoot- ing to the top, or at least close lo it.

Logical Contender For Heavyweight Title

Milwaukee, Dec. 28,

The National Boxing Association of America today declared: Nino Valdes of Cuba the logical contender for Rocky Marciano's world heavyweight title,

In their winter ratings the Association named Don Cockell, the British Heavyweight Champion, and Ezzard Charles, former world title holder, as "outstanding boxers" In this division..

The Association confirmed that they no longer recognised Sandy Saddler (United States) and Robert Cohen (France) as respective holders of the world featherweight, and boritarn weight titles

Blackburn went very close to promotion last season and have most of the assets required for the Second Division Champion- ship. They have a first-class my old friend Johnny Carey and a side of great experience-Bobby Lang- and Bill Eckersley are ton playing brilliantly with youth represented by Ron Clayton, one of the game's outstanding young half-backs.

The Most Beautiful Girls In The World Now Head For Rome

By JOHN WREN

Rome.

"British movie actresses are so dulloh, so dull. No figures. Hair like chewed straw. Any little Italian housemaid is more glamorous than the highest-paid British stars,”

The scene was Rome's Hollywood-on-Tiber, celluloid factory of the world's most luscious lovelies.

The speaker was an Italian director who has helped make La Lollo (Gina Lollobrigida), La Pampam (Silvana Pampanini) and others.

As I watched the galaxy of beauty around me I felt like agreeing with the Italian. Gorgeous girls with dark, shoulder-length hair were swishing between dressing-rooms and cameras by the dozen, and I seemed in real danger of being run down by the graceful, fong-legged creatures.

Assuredly they were match- |
