Industry Faces Crisis

Antwerp, Dec. 18.

The Antwerp diamond industry, formerly one Belgium's main sources of prosperity, is facing serious crisis.

The famous Antwerp diamond houses, known the world over for the quality of their cutting and polishing, are operating on slender profit margins and troubled by frequent strikes.

Today, nearly, one of the city's 12,000′ diamond workers are unemployed, while the wages of those at work have dropped considerably from the immediate postwar period when they were considered "the aristocrats of European Labour.”
