A lightning epidemic of inflation jitters hit the City of London last week. For 36 hours it raged; and then as suddenly as it came it was gone leaving its victims wiser for the experience.
The City had been sickening for the attack for some time. Six weeks ago both the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Governor of the Bank of England dropped a hint that the economy might be edging towards inflation. But at that time the patient felt well enough to ignore the doctor's warning.
