Swedeu To Develop A-Weapons

Stockholm, Nov. 1. Sweden plans to equip her forces with tactical atomic weapons and robot weapons under a 10-year modernisa- tion programme, it was an- nounced today by the Com- mander-in-Chief, General. Nils Svedlund.

A total of 528,000,000 crowns (about £30,375,000) has been reserved for the new weapons, increasing Sweden's annual arms spending from 2,202,000,000 crowns to 2,740,000,000 TOWNE

General Svedlund said further money might be needed but an expected increase of 2.5 per curat in national income would keep the arms bill to within divo per cent of national income.

Cost would be kept down by decreasing the army share of spending from 41 to 34 per cent and the Navy's from 20 to 17 per cent, while the airforco share would rise from 32 to 87 per ccal.

ABOLISHING 'CAVALRY

In the case of the army, this would mean abolishing the cavalry as a fighting, unit and reducing the number of field battalions by 12 per cent. Army quality would be increased by greater mobilty, heavier arma¬ ment and grenter fire power, - especially anti-aircraft equip- ment,
